Sophie Bain-Tohl, LMFT

HI, I'M Sophie

Supporting individuals, couples, children, and families in developing deeper self-understanding, emotional balance, and stronger relationships.

I believe therapy offers a space to slow down, reflect, and better understand the patterns that shape how we think, feel, and relate to others. Many of the challenges people face—such as anxiety, overwhelm, or disconnection in relationships—often have roots in earlier experiences and the ways we learned to cope during difficult moments in life.

In our work together, my goal is to create a warm, collaborative, and supportive environment where you can explore what’s going on beneath the surface and begin developing new ways of responding to stress, relationships, and life transitions.

Clients often describe my approach as steady, compassionate, and grounding. I work at a pace that helps people feel safe enough to be honest about what is difficult, while also building practical tools that support meaningful change.

Areas of Focus

  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Relationship challenges and couples therapy

  • Fertility journeys and pregnancy-related anxiety

  • Early parenthood and family transitions

  • Identity shifts and major life changes

  • Adoption and family dynamics

  • Behavioral and emotional challenges in children and teens

  • Stress and nervous system regulation

My Approach to Therapy

I take an integrative and relational approach to therapy, recognizing that emotional wellbeing is influenced by our relationships, our past experiences, and how our bodies respond to stress.

Together, we work to better understand the patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, disconnection, or emotional distress, while developing skills that help you feel more grounded and capable of navigating life’s challenges.

My work draws from several evidence-based and relationally focused approaches, including:

  • Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP), which helps connect emotional experiences with the body’s stress responses

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to strengthen connection and communication within relationships

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to support emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness

  • Spiritual psychology, when helpful, to explore meaning, values, and personal growth

These approaches allow us to address not only current symptoms but also the deeper patterns that influence how we relate to ourselves and others.

Supporting Insight and Lasting Change

Over the years, I have learned that the challenges people experience in the present are often connected to patterns formed much earlier in life.

These patterns may have once served as ways to cope or stay safe, but over time they can begin to create stress, disconnection, or emotional overwhelm.

Therapy provides an opportunity to slow down and explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion. As we develop greater awareness and understanding, it becomes possible to create new ways of responding that feel more aligned, stable, and supportive.

My goal is to help clients feel:

  • More connected to themselves and their emotions

  • Better able to regulate stress and overwhelm

  • More confident in their relationships

  • Equipped with practical tools for navigating life’s challenges

Clinical Background

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have spent over 15 years supporting individuals, couples, children, teens, and families through some of the most vulnerable and transitional periods of their lives.

My clinical work has included helping clients navigate:

  • Fertility and pregnancy-related anxiety

  • The transition into parenthood

  • Relationship strain and communication challenges

  • Adoption and evolving family dynamics

  • Childhood and teen behavioral and emotional difficulties

  • Identity shifts and major life changes

Through this work, I have developed a deep appreciation for how personal experiences, relationships, and life transitions shape emotional wellbeing.

A Collaborative and Human Approach

I believe therapy works best when the relationship between therapist and client feels genuine, supportive, and collaborative.

My aim is to offer a space where you can explore challenges openly, better understand the patterns influencing your life, and build the tools needed to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
